This project, running from 2016 to 2018, explored how patients and families are involved in formal processes following serious adverse events, such as suicides and suicide attempts, in Dutch mental healthcare. By analyzing policies from 15 healthcare organizations and interviewing 35 stakeholders, the study found that involvement mostly consists of providing aftercare and sharing information, with barriers like privacy concerns limiting deeper participation. While involvement helps emotionally and provides additional insights, respondents stressed that it should not be mandatory and should begin early in the treatment process.
